HIGH-SCHOOL GIRL'S FRIEND
Genichiro is a retiree who is living with his son's family. After his wife's death, he feels lonely, yet he maintains a good relationship with his granddaughter Azusa, a 15-year-old high-school student. Mina is another high-school student and she is also very lonely. She is bored in school, and at home her separated mother only shows interest in Mina's brother. One day Mina learns that her friend Mayu has become pregnant. Mina has no way of helping Mayu since her father's company has just gone bankrupt. Mina and Mayu search for a way out of their troubles. By chance Genichiro and Azusa are out shopping when they run into Mayu, Mina and some other girls. They all end up going to a karaoke bar together with Azusa and Genichiro, who finds himself attracted to Mina. She seems unique, unusual. His feelings toward her are definitely different from how he feels towards Azusa or the other girls...
Tetsuo Shinohara
Born in Tokyo in 1962, Tetsuo Shinohara graduated from Meiji University in 1985 and began his filmmaking career as an assistant to such directors as Yoshimitsu Morita, Kichitaro Negishi and Shun Nakahara. He also worked extensively in television and video. His filmography includes: RUNNING HIGH (1989), WORK ON THE GRASS (1993), ONE MORE TIME, ONE MORE CHANCE (1996), LEAVE IT TO ME FOR A WASHING MACHINE (1998),THINGS I CAN DO FOR YOU (1999), FIRST LOVE (2000) and HARIKOMI (2000). His latest film, INOCHI (2002), is also showing (in Official Competition) at this year's Montreal World Film Festival.
