THE BED OF PROCRUSTES
A hot summer's day in Bucharest, in August 1928. Fred Vasilescu, a gentleman aviator from a wealthy family, pays a visit to an actress named Emilia, with whom he has an occasional affair -- as do many other men in the city. While he is at Emilia's, he discovers a bundle of love letters addressed to the actress from a good friend of his -- a poet and a well-known journalist named Ladima, who committed suicide three months earlier. As he browses through the letters and considers how strange their secret liaison must have been, Vasilescu's thoughts wander back to the beginning of his own friendship with Ladima. Vasilescu remembers how, a few years earlier, thoroughly drunk, he once publicly humiliated the woman he loved, and how Ladima was the only one who dared to stand up to him. The next day, the two men found themselves opponents in a duel during which both decided to shoot into the air rather than at each other. Before long, the stranger became Vasilescu's closest friend and confidant. Ladima was the only person with whom Vasilescu felt able to discuss his unrequited love for Madame T., who was the cause of their duel. Later, when Vasilescu's father was looking for an editor for his newspaper, Vasilescu managed to get Ladima the job. And Ladima became a journalist of impeccable morality, resisting all attempts to slant his paper's political coverage. Vasilescu is puzzled. What could have drawn such an honourable man to this "loose" woman? What secrets did Ladima keep from his friend? And why did he take his own life?

His filmography includes: Without Words (1987), Sir Mayor and the Lover of his Wife (1990), The Best Among the Worlds, or Just a Fall Day (1991), Paula (1992). THE BED OF PROCRUSTES is his first feature.
