KABALA
Kabala, a small village of the Mande region, has been hard hit by drought and is on the verge of dying. The holy Well of the Ancestors looks like it may finally be drying up permanently. A dance of fire is organized to revive it. Hamalla cannot participate in the dance because of questions about his legitimacy. According to his father, he is the illegitimate son of Yassa, an old woman shunned as a witch because her legitimate children and husband have all died. Humiliated, he leaves the village for the territory of the mines. Four years pass and Hamalla, now ill, returns to Kabala and finds that the village is firmly in thrall to its traditions. He discovers that Sokona, his old girlfriend, is being married off to the villainous Seriba, and Hamalla's attempts to clean up the holy well are fiercely opposed by the village's official sorcerer Fakourou. Hamalla must convince the wise men of Kabala of the vital necessity of drilling in the sacred well, which, though a powerful symbol of the village's spirituality, has become a dangerous source of cholera. How can he overcome their superstitions?"The film questions the place of traditions in our society. We have to take decisions, know what is still good and is no longer." -- Assane Kouyat
