DAUGHTER FROM YAN'AN
He Haixia, who lives in a poor village in the remote Chinese province of Yan'an, was abandoned by her biological parents when she was a newborn baby 28 years ago. Her mother and father were Red Guards who had been "sent down" to Yan'an during the Cultural Revolution. Haixia would like to find them and she is helped by Huang Yuling, a former "sent youth" whose sympathy for her stems from his own painful experiences during that period, when he was accused of being a counter-revolutionary. Nearly three decades later, Haixia and Yuling set out on a journey to uncover the truth."I think the camera can be a cruel instrument. It can distressing to people it records, so documentary filmmakers need to be aware of the dangers. I can hardly understate the courage of the people who have agreed to face and expose the painful past of the Cultural Revolution in front of the camera." -- Ikeya Kaoru
