ORIUME
Yuzo Kanno, a businessman, lives happily with his wife Tomoe and their children Mizuho and Shunsuke in a suburb of Nagoya. When Yuzo's mother, who has been living some 20 miles away, becomes lonely, the family invites her to move in with them. But soon after her arrival, Masako begins acting strangely. She sews rags every morning and passes them on to Tomoe. She goes to take out the garbage but ends up leaving it in front of a neighbour's gate. She has tantrums and throws a lunch box on the floor. Yuzo's family are confused and irritated by Masako's behaviour and the familial strains begin to appear. Tomoe takes her mother-in-law to a doctor who diagnoses Masako with Alzheimer's. Tomoe had been working part-time at a flower wholesaler's. She would like to keep her job but Masako's condition deteriorates to the point that she needs full-time care. Yuzo and Tomoe argue about what to do and their relationship suffers. The entire family begins to feel the stress and Masako herself is frightened that she no longer has control over her own actions. She cannot recognize herself and she is horrified by what the future might bring. Then, one day, Masako suddenly disappears from the family home...
