MR. ROOKIE
One summer in the first decade of the 21st century, a mysterious, masked "Mr. Rookie" appears out of nowhere and sparks a pennant drive by the famously hard-luck team of Japanese baseball, the Hanshin Tigers. But, for some reason, he will only play at Koshien Stadium, the Tigers' home park. Selected to appear in the all-star game, he refuses; he is no ordinary "rookie". His name is Ohara Koji, he is 32 years old, he has a wife, Yuko, and a young son, Shunsuke. He works for a large construction company. As a high-school player, he made it as far as the national finals, held at Koshien Stadium, before injuring his shoulder and abandoning organized baseball for a decade. A year ago, however, he was induced to play in a pickup game, talked into pitching, and he re-injured his shoulder. Koji is depressed. Yang, a masseur who happens to be the Tigers' trainer, is on the scene, and he treats Koji's shoulder. With his secret medicine and three months' rehabilitation, he tells Koji, his shoulder will be as good as new. Koji undergoes the gruelling therapy and recovers the blazing fastball he once had. Yang introduces him to Segawa, the Tigers' manager, who is impressed by what he sees in Koji. But Koji is reluctant to risk his job for another try at the majors, so Segawa comes up with a wild idea: Koji will join the team as a part-time pitcher, appearing only at Koshien Stadium, and wearing a mask to keep his identity secret from both his family and his employer. His mask in place, Koji takes his place on the mound...
