GOD'S CHILDREN
In 1995, the Philippine government decided to evacuate an enormous mountain of garbage north of Manila known as "Smoky Mountain". At the time, some 40,000 people were living there. Some of the mountain's former residents moved to Quezon City to set up home in another hill named "Payatas" in order to continue to make their living from recycling rubbish. Filming for this documentary began at the hill on July 2, 2000. The next day, it began to rain and it didn't stop raining for an entire week. The relentless rain prompted a landslide which resulted in 1000 deaths. Five days later, the government also shut down this dump. A victory for the environment, one might think. But the film shows us the other side of the problem. It confronts us with the lives of the impoverished people for whom the closure of these refuse dumps has meant losing their only means of survival."An unblinking documentary portrait of hell... you will leave the film awed at the human capacity to adapt and even to find moments of joy in the most squalid circumstances." -- Stephen Holden (New York Times)
