A LITTLE MONK
Do-nyeom is a 9-year-old Korean boy and he is also a Buddhist monk. He lives in two worlds -- the silent and lonely world of the temple and the lively world full of fun that can be found in the village at the foot of the mountain. He is constantly tormented by questions about his parents and he is often harassed by kids in the village. The young adult monk Jeong-shim has problems of his own. In particular he is struggling to reconcile his own two worlds, the spiritual one of the temple and the secular one which beckons from beyond its walls. The stern temple master monk offers no solace to either of his charges. One day the little monk becomes fascinated by a woman who is visiting the temple. She is a widow who has come for the reincarnation ceremony for her deceased son, who was about the same age as the little monk. The boy has never seen anyone as beautiful as this woman and he cannot help thinking how wonderful it would be to have her as his mother. And, after all, didn't the temple's handyman assure him that his mother would come for him in the spring? The temple master dismisses such dreams out of hand. He tells both monks that they have been cooped up in the temple for too long and that they should go out and experience some of life's harsh realities before getting too romantic about what lies outside. The two monks obey. They are taken by the delights of the secular, materialistic world, but this freedom soon palls and they return to the security of the temple. Then the lady whom the little monk calls "mom" pays the temple another visit...
