THE CHILDREN OF RUSSIA
During the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939, Spanish Republican fighters, fearing for the safety of their families, evacuated their children to the Soviet Union. The last two kindertransport ships left the ports of Bilbao and Gijn in June 1937. When they arrived in Leningrad, the children were enthusiastically welcomed by the Russian populace and provided with decent accommodation. They were well looked after by the Soviet authorities. In these casas de nios, as they were called, there was plenty to eat. The children were provided with schooling and the opportunity to play music, paint or dance ballet. All in all, despite their distance from home, the children were able to lead fairly normal, even pampered lives. This arrangement was supposed to be temporary, but with the outbreak of the Second World War, and, especially, the German invasion of 1941, their repatriation was postponed indefinitely. Their evacuation to the Urals is interrupted numerous times by the Red Army's need to use the railway tracks. Following the defeat of the Germans, the children were able to return to their casas in Moscow and Leningrad, but there was still no sign of their being able to return to Spain. It isn't until 1956, after many of the children have reached adulthood and started families of their own -- many with Russian partners -- that the governments of Spain and the Soviet Union finally reached an agreement to repatriate the "children from Spain"."A powerful documentary on the kind of surreal, cruel subject that 20th century Spanish history sometimes tosses up." -- Jonathan Holland (Variety)
