AUGUST -- A MOMENT BEFORE THE ERUPTION
Avi Mograbi believes that the month of August can serve as a metaphor for everything that is unpleasant in the state of Israel. His wife, on the other hand, is rather fond of August, seeing it as a very optimistic time of year. When Mograbi goes out into the street to begin filming, he finds himself losing control over what his camera is shooting. Despite that, however, by the very failure to accomplish his mission and document whatever he was after, he succeeds in telling the story he wanted to originally. He goes out to document August, to record what is so horrible about the month, and he ends up becoming August himself. At the same time, his wife is taken captive by the producer of another film, a documentary about the shooting of Muslim worshippers by a deranged Israeli in the cave of Machpela (a shrine to Abraham) in the town of Hebron in 1994. All three characters -- the filmmaker, the filmmaker's wife and the producer -- are played by Mograbi himself.
