THE DEMOLITION MAN
Biman, head of the municipal demolition department, is a man of routine. His day begins with morning tea at 7 a.m., a visit to the local market between 7:30 amd 8:00, then a hectic commute from his suburban home to downtown Calcutta. Son of a middle-class family, Biman is a dutiful husband with a refined taste in music; his only passion is for gardening, and he has a beautiful garden which he nurses like a doting father. Biman has been married for ten years and his wife Mouli has apparently adjusted herself to the dull domestic life that accompanies their marriage. At work, meanwhile, Biman carries out his job of demolishing illegal shops and bustees fairly and without prejudice. He knows that corruption is rampant in municipal politics, but he refuses to be bribed. He has his moments of doubt -- along with sharp pangs of remorse -- when his actions render some people homeless, but he believes he has an important job to do. Biman's deep involvement in his official duties has also meant less time to spend with Mouli and the fact that they are childless has also been a source of pain. When Indra, an old classmate of Mouli's, shows up one day and their friendship is rekindled, Biman begins to suspect that she no longer loves him and that he may be keeping her in the marriage against her will. Biman is haunted by nightmares and he begins to wonder whether he is living a lie. He decides that it is time to confront all these doubts...
