THE CLAY BIRD
Against the troubled political background of the late 1960s, Anu, a shy youth from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), is sent by his orthodox Muslim father Kazi to a madrasah (religious school). Kazi has abandoned the sophisticated European ways of his own youth to immerse himself in the Koran. He rejects westernized medicine to treat his ailing daughter and he is furious at his wife's brother for introducing Anu to sensuous Hindu folk rituals. At the madrasah, Anu struggles to adapt to the harshness of monastic life, far from the warmth of the Hindu festivities of his region. He makes friends with Rokon, another outcast, and spends much of his time fantasizing. When Anu contracts an ear infection and begins hearing ringing noises, he is plunged under water before the entire school in some sort of exorcism ceremony. Meanwhile, the Pakistani army is beginning to suppress the local rebellion and Anu's family must decide whether to leave their village."This charming, gentle film (was) one of the real finds of the (Cannes) festival. It is a tale told with humour, visual flair and a canny sense of narrative. (Director) Masud shows real feeling for both the children's sadness and their ingenious pluck in the face of life's trials." -- Peter Bradshaw (London Guardian)
