OUAGADOUGOU, CELL 32
What's special about the Ouagadougou Detention Centre and Reformatory, is its organization: 750 inmates are left to themselves in a building designed for 400, under the authority of an inmate known as the "yard chief", who, in turn, is controlled by the prison authorities. Here, in an unsual setting, is a traditional chieftainship, reproducing the old tribal and village hierarchy. What rules and means do they use to make 750 criminals accept their inhuman detention conditions? What face of African society do they show us? What is their relationship with the prison administration?
