THE EMBALMER
Peppino, a middle-aged dwarf who works as a taxidermist (and moonlights as a drug courier for the local mafia) in a small town near Naples, likes visiting the zoo. He likes animals alive and he likes them dead. One day at the zoo he meets tall handsome young Valerio, who seems to share his interest in animals. Peppino, who is looking for an assistant, someone to whom he can transmit his enthusiasm for his craft, offers Valerio a more interesting and better-paying job than waiting in a restaurant. Peppino's relationship with Valerio turns out to be more complex than that of a mentor to his protege. He clearly desires the young man sexually but cannot confess it openly, so he arranges double dates with prostitutes. At Peppino's prompting, Valerio moves out of his parents' house and into Peppino's. But the taxidermist's sentimental plans are upset by the entry into Valerio's life of Deborah, young, restless and highly suspicious of Peppino. Matteo Garrone
Born in Rome in 1968, Matteo Garrone graduated from the Artistic Lyceum and made his directorial debut with Silhouette in 1996. The following year he founded his own production company, Archimede, and directed his first feature film, TERRA DI MEZZO. His filmography includes: Benvienido Espirito Santo (1997), Un caso di forza maggiore (1998), Oreste Pipolo, fotografo di matrimoni (1998), OSPITI (1998) and ESTATE ROMANA (2000).
