SONG OF THE STORK
It is April 1968 and the latest batch of enlisted young men have just arrived at the Xuan Mai training camp to join the ongoing Vietnamese-American war. Five young men begin a journey both physical and psychological that will change their lives forever. They are together for only a brief time, but the bond that joins them is the same one that holds a broken country together. May (Lucky) as his name implies, is a good-natured, happy-go-lucky character whose main ambition in life is to marry a plump, jolly woman, have many kids and live happily-ever-after at home on the farm. Manh (Strong) is the 16-year-old son of a simple farmer who has lied about his age to enlist in the army. He does not really realize what he is getting into. He and May build a bond of brotherhood that will more than once save their lives. Van (Literature) is the romantic who plays the guitar, sings love songs and writes poetry. A dreamer of sorts, he records the horrors of the war in his poetry and through the letters to his wife. Van represents the human side of the war and the reminder that all who fought in the war were fathers, sons and brothers who had family and loved ones waiting at home, many never to see them again. Lam is a spy. Through his missions in enemy territory, we see that even the hardest of soldiers are human beings with emotions and feelings. He marries Thuy Lan, a South Vietnamese colonel's daughter who is a student activist. Will their relationship last through the end of the war? And Vinh, the war correspondent, sets the tone through his documentary film footage. He is the man who is always at the core of the action, but never demands any recognition. His role is simply to watch and record what happens around him.
