SISTER HELEN
Sister Helen Travis, a 69-year-old Benedictine sister, runs a 23-bed halfway house in the tough Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. Her institution, the John Thomas Travis Center, is a drug- and alcohol-free haven for men who want to face up to their past and move on to the future. Sister Helen's past experiences hold the key to her present life: her own decades-long struggle with alcoholism and a tragic string of personal losses, including the drug- and alcohol-related deaths of her two sons and her husband. These events are what pushed her to help others get a second chance in life. She has picked the toughest neighbourhood and the most hardened men to help and she brooks no backsliding. She encourages the men when they are doing well, but she quickly threatens them with eviction if they break her two iron rules: that they be honest and sober. And the men support her without reservation. They need her love and they need her toughness. When she isn't around, the centre begins to unravel."The movie is funny, shrewd and surprisingly forceful... (The film) is an intimate portrait of a cranky saviour who needs her addicts as much as they need her." -- Owen Gleiberman (Entertainment Weekly)"A comprehensive, compassionate and sublimely unvarnished glimpse into the life of a true angel." -- Duane Byrge (Hollywood Reporter)
