SUPPLEMENT
What is happiness for two young people today? What does it mean to live at the height of your ambitions, follow your greatest dreams, live fully and truly? Is this at all possible today? The answer in SUPPLEMENT is an unequivocal yes. This is the story of love between two young people. Filip is torn by doubt. He wants to avoid becoming average, one of the many rats in the race for material wealth. Repelled by the toils of everyday life, he thinks seriously about entering a monastery. Hanka attends night school and earns a partial living as a dressing room attendant on film sets and during fashion shows. She earnestly fears that she may be a barrier to the young man's self-fulfillment. She also wonders whether she shouldn't encourage him to be bolder in life."One might think that SUPPLEMENT is a sort of addition to my previous film, LIFE AS A FATAL SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE, but that would only be partly true... In LIFE I barely sketched the story of the young characters. I had to concentrate on the character of the dying doctor and cut many of the scenes with the young actors when the film was practically done. Then I thought about something I remembered from the 19th century novels of writers like Balzac, who would take a peripheral character from one book and turn him or her into the central character of another." -- Krzysztof Zanussi
Krzysztof Zanussi
Born in Warsaw in 1939, Krzysztof Zanussi studied physics and philosophy before enrolling in the Lodz Film School. His 1966 graduation short, Death of a Provincial, won a number of festival prizes, but it was his first feature, THE STRUCTURE OF CRYSTALS (1969), that first brought him to international attention. In the late 1980s, after the defeat of the Solidarity movement, he worked abroad, but returned to Poland following the collapse of the Communist regime. Selected filmography: BEHIND THE WALL (1971), FAMILY LIFE (1971), THE CATAMOUNT KILLING (1974), A WOMAN'S DECISION (1978), SPIRALE (1978), THE CONTRACT (1980), THE CONSTANT FACTOR (1980), BLUEBEARD (1984), THE YEAR OF THE QUIET SUN (1984), LE POUVOIR DU MAL (1985), LIFE FOR LIFE - MAXIMILIAN KOLBE (1991), LIFE AS A FATAL SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (2000).
