BEMANI
Dariush Mehrjui, whose 1969 THE COW ushered in the modern era of Iranian filmmaking, tells the stories of three contemporary young women in a remote village near the Iraqi border. Madina, a young Iraqi woman who works in the village weaving carpets, befriends an Iranian soldier who accompanies her home one day. Her male family members are outraged and cut off her head. Nassim is studying medicine at the university without her father's knowledge. She is found out and her father comes to drag her out of class. Locked in the cellar as punishment, she sets herself on fire. Bemani, the title heroine (her name means "to stay alive"), is given in marriage to her family's landlord to alleviate the burden of their rent. Reduced to little more than slavery, the young bride endures in pain until she can no longer tolerate her fate. She commits an act of desperation that is apparently not unknown in the region. A young doctor comments that perhaps larger hospitals should be built to accommodate the high rate of suicide attempts..."(BEMANI) possesses an immense rage and compassion, and often a remarkable visual sense, that confirms the talent of its author." -- Jean-Michel Frodon (Le Monde)
