Back
THE LONGING
Lena lives with her tyrannical husband Johannes in a dreary village in the Swabian-Frankish forest. Theirs is a loveless marriage. Johannes is the community's spiritual leader and Lena is his faithful, ever-willing-to-serve wife. Lena's daily life is governed by grinding monotony, an existence circumscribed by nursing, organ playing and the duties of the marriage bed. The mysterious murder of a village girl knocks this humdrum existence off its tracks. In the wake of these events, Lena discovers the affection and tenderness which she had always longed for in Paul, the village mechanic. This encounter is the beginning of an emotional emancipation, but the fear of losing her newly won happiness leads her to keep mum about a secret she has discovered regarding the girl's murder. Love has redeemed her and it risks causing her damnation.
