EAT, SLEEP, NO WOMEN
Sunday, October 7, 2001. At 6:27 p.m. Afghanistan time, the first missiles hit their targets in Kabul, Kandahar and Jalalabad. "America Strikes Back" read the headlines. On this fateful Sunday, a billboard painter in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, worries about the date set for his wedding. In a mining town on the Amazon, the spirits of two men soar when the price of gold begins to rise. An out-of-work musician plays in the Paris metro. A South African miner works an extra shift. An American in China writes a letter to his wife in Ohio. An Egyptian pop star considers whether he should go ahead with a concert in Washington. It is like the story of the butterfly in China, which with a flap of its wings sets off a storm on the other side of the world. But in this film the perspective is reversed. When bombs fall in Afghanistan, can a marital dispute erupt in Paris? Will a concert-goer in Washington find himself before locked doors? Will the bride in Pakistan never see her groom again? Or the wife in Ohio, will she trust her husband even though she has no reason to?
