MOHOHAN -- COPYCAT KILLER
A girl's right arm and a bag are found in a trash can at a downtown park. Yoshio Arima suspects that they belonged to his granddaughter who has been missing for ten months. Several days later, a man who claims to be the murderer informs a TV station during a live broadcast that the bag belonged to a woman named Mariko Furukawa and that the arm was someone else's. The self-styled kidnapper and murderer sends other TV stations pornographic snapshots of other girls claiming that they were all his victims. He seems to enjoy broadcasting his crimes. A reporter, Shigeko Maehata, is disgusted but no one can provide any firm identification of the murderer. Then the police find two bodies in a car that plunged off a cliff and burst into flame. The two bodies in the wreckage are those of Hiromi Kurihashi and Kazuaki Takai. The police find Mariko Furukawa's train pass and copies of the photos sent to the TV stations. The police and the press conclude that the two dead men where responsible for the murders. But not everybody agrees. A handsome young man named Koichi Amikawa contends that Hiromi and Kazuaki are innocent. They were his mates in school, where he was nicknamed "Peace" because his smiling face reminded people of the peace symbol. Koichi majored in criminal psychology at Yale University and he says that someone else is the murderer. He offers elaborate explanations for the murderer's behaviour. He becomes a media darling...
