Back
THE SEAGULL'S LAUGHTER
In 1953, Freya, an beautiful Icelandic woman in her twenties, returns from America. She had married an American serviceman during the war and moved with him to the U.S., but now she is back, a widow. Or so she says. She settles down with somewhat distant relatives, mostly women, in a small fishing town near Reykjavik. The only member of the household to doubt her story is her young cousin Agga, an 11-year-old on the brink of puberty who -- like many of the local men -- can't make up her mind whether the statuesque newcomer is a devil or an angel. Freya doesn't waste time in deciding to put her looks and her American fashion sense to work. She has her sights set on a wealthy engineer, Bjorn Theodor, an old boyfriend who seems to be headed into a marriage with the daughter of the local magistrate. And Agga, who had earlier tried to denounce Freya to a bemused local cop, now joins her bandwagon and even contributes some of her own pre-adolescent scheming towards her cousin's cause. But when Freya finally manages to move in with Theodor into his posh house, she suddenly finds that her feminine wiles don't work as well with his strong-minded and snobbish mother. Freya's elaborate plans for her social advancement will now have to undergo some revision."A vampish young widow melts the reserve of a small Icelandic town in THE SEAGULL'S LAUGHTER, a sprightly, enjoyable comedy-drama from veteran gst Gudmundsson that's buoyed by a raft of excellent distaff performances." -- Derek Elley (Variety)
