SAY I DO
The business of "mail-order brides" is flourishing. Websites, newspaper ads and penpal agencies sell contact information to link Western men with Oriental and Eastern European women. Men who seek foreign brides are looking for women with traditional values and have been unsuccessful in relationships with Western women. Many of the women who come to Canada as mail-order brides are from the Philippines, one of the world's poorest countries. Motivated by dreams of a better life, these women leave everything behind to marry men they hardly know. What lies ahead is uncertain. The lucky ones find stability. The less fortunate can suffer terrible consequences. All of them are willing to take the risk.
