ONE DAY IN AUGUST
The 15th of August in Greece is the day of the Dormition of the Virgin in the Orthodox calendar but for most Athenians it is little more than an excuse to leave for a vacation in the country. The film follows the inhabitants of a particular Athens apartment block as they escape the sweltering city in their cars -- two couples and a working-class family comprising mother and father and a pair of kids. And while the cats are away, the mouse will play: a teenage burglar stays behind to have his run of the temporarily unoccupied apartments. Kostas and Katia are a yuppie pair in their 30s whose relationship has cooled: while he's comfortable with material things she'd like to have a child before her biological clock stops ticking. They leave to their country house in Pelion. Also heading north are working-class couple Fanis and Morfoula, with their slightly retarded son and a pretty daughter who has cancer. Heading south to the Peleponnesus are the bohemian couple Mihalis, who is heavily into drugs, and Sandra, who is waiting for the opportune moment to ditch him for her lover. When Mihalis runs over a pedestrian, the opportunity seems to have come. Meanwhile, Kosta and Katia's shaky relationship is given an added nudge when they pick up a mysterious hitchhiker, and Fanis and Morfoula's little girl goes missing at a pilgrimage site...
Constantinos Giannaris
Born in Athens in 1959, Constantinos Giannaris studied economics and history at various universities in England before embarking on a career in the cinema in the mid-80s with a series of short films, documentaries and television dramas.
