DRANCY, LAST STOP BEFORE THE ABYSS...
In a northern suburb of Paris sits the abandoned station of Bobigny, from which trains with cattle cars transported Jewish prisoners of Drancy to the extermination camps of Auschwitz, Majdanek and Sobibor. Opened on August 20, 1941, the Drancy camp was the only one in France whose prisoners were solely Jews or those so designated by the Vichy government. From March 1942 to August 1944, 76,174 Jews, more than 11,000 of them children, were shipped off to destinations unknown under the cover of Nacht und Nebel ("night and fog"). This tragic episode, for a long time hidden to history, is exposed by the testimony of the survivors or those they left behind.
