BITTER SWEET
Life in Penzance, on the Cornish coast of England, has gotten to be as oppressive as in the big city. Despair and the nihilism of a culture of instant gratification are as pervasive in a picture postcard holiday paradise as in the deserts of inner city ghettos. Becky and Jack were madly in love once, but drugs got in the way. She cheated him out of a deal, and, to make matters worse, shopped him to the police. She soon regrets acting so impetuously, but she is not sorry to be rid of him. Jack was getting to be far too possessive for her liking. She still loves Jack in her own way, but being alone for the time being suits her. When Jack is released from prison, he sets out to find her. Even though he suffers from psychopathic tendencies, he has been released into the community, given a squalid room and asked to start anew. Instead, he goes back to his bad old ways, stealing to pay for his habit and nursing a vague dream of revenge. His love for Becky is an unhealthy obsession which has turned into hatred. Jack has always had problems with women. Convinced that his mother rejected him, just as she rejected his father, Jack now hates both her and his stepfather. He had a romantic notion that Becky was different, but when she lets him down, Jack's world collapses and his love is transformed into bitterness. Becky, in the meantime, turns tricks for money, working under the cover of an aromatherapist in Penzance. But Jack is persistent. When he tracks her down, will it be to renew their relationship or to end it forever?
