THE AGE OF TERROR -- IN THE NAME OF THE STATE
Potentially the most dangerous terror of all is that which is backed by the full force of the state. Chuck Hegna was murdered by Hezbollah terrorists who hijacked his plane in 1984. It is now known that his murderers were supported and sponsored by the very state on whose soil the murder took place: Iran. While Iranian, Libyan and Iraqi sponsorship of terrorism is now well accepted, even democratic governments have indulged in using terrorist surrogates. The CIA was particularly active in Nicaragua during the campaign of the Contras, and Argentine government agencies waged a so-called "dirty war" in the late 1970s and 1980s, during which thousands of Argentine citizens "disappeared".
