BEDTIME FAIRY TALES FOR CROCODILES
Chainsmoking Arc�ngel Ju�rez lives in the city and suffers from chronic insomnia. His wife Teresa, who must cope as well with their autistic son, is exasperated and leaves him. Arc�ngel receives a phone message from his long-estranged brother that their father is dying, and he sets off to a remote town in the country to see the old man for the last time. When he arrives at the village, he is surprised to find out that both his father and his brother are long dead. Searching for his roots, he discovers that his family has been afflicted by a curse for several generations: his great grandfather, desperate to get his hands on family property, killed his own brother. Arc�ngel also discovers why he suffers from insomnia. The story of his family and ancestors goes back to 1860, and was influenced by key events in Mexican history such as the reign of Benito Ju�rez, the French occupation, the Reform War of 1857-60, the reign of Archduke Maximilian, the Mexican Revolution and mass emigration to the United States. Arc�ngel begins to remember his childhood -- his mother had run off with another man, and he himself had been thrown out by his father after a serious argument with his brother. Now knowing the secrets of his past, Arc�ngel tries to remedy the present.
Ignacio Ort�z Cruz
Born in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1957, Ignacio Ort�z Cruz studied medicine at the Mexican National University, then scriptwriting and film production at the Film Training Centre. He began his career writing scripts for such films as BENJAMIN'S WIFE (1990), MARRIED LIFE (1992) and NO SENDER (1994). That same year he made his directorial debut with The Man Who Doesn't Listen to Boleros and THE SHORE OF THE EARTH.
