HEJAR
Rifat, a retired judge of 75, is getting ready to go and live in a home for old people. Hejar is left by fellow-villager Abdlkadir at her uncle's house after she loses her whole family in a military operation in the village. Their paths cross in Istanbul. The police raid the house where Hejar was deposited but she escapes arrest by hiding in the buffet. Meanwhile, Sakine, Rifat's housekeeper, is taking out the garbage when she sees Hejar emerging from the house opposite. The girl is covered in blood. Sakine panics and shuts the door. When she reopens it, with Rifat by her side, the child stumbles into the house. Rifat wants to hand her over to the police but he relents when he realizes that she is injured and in shock. Another surprise is in store for Rifat when he and Sakine clean her up: the girl is Kurdish and doesn't speak a word of Turkish. He also learns through their encounter that Sakine, who had been his housekeeper for a decade and whom he trusts implicitly, is Kurdish as well. He forbids Kurdish in the house. Hejar is a stubborn girl and she refuses any relationship with Rifat. For his part, the judge cannot accept that she doesn't speak Turkish. They quarrel. But, in time, the mutual loathing gives way first to tolerance and then to fondness. Then a neighbour of Rifat, an elderly woman who thinks they should live together, learns of Hejar's existence. Jealous of the child's presence in Rifat's home, she informs the police...
