LE CHANT DE LA NORIA
Zeineb, 30, is happy to be getting her divorce. She hopes that this will free her at last to do what she wants with her life and with whom she wants. Forced into an arranged marriage when she was a girl, she now has the law on her side. But in Tunisia the laws governing divorce often come up against immutable social and religious traditions. Her ex-husband's family resents the law's intrusion into their affairs. Zeineb runs across M'Hamed, whom she had loved when they were younger. She is interested in resuming their relationship but senses that she is being followed. She disappears into the crowd. M'Hamed was hoping to study history in France but his bursary didn't come through and he is reduced to working as a teacher in a rundown public school. Visiting the gravesite of his father in the country, M'Hamed runs into Ali, a former government strongman who had fled to America until the heat died down. Now back in Tunisia, he's hoping his past is behind him. Ali offers to take M'Hamed to a friend in the south who's working on an American film. This might be just what M'Hamed needs to earn the hard cash for plane fare to France. But when he returns to his apartment to pack, who should be waiting for him but Zeineb. Both of them are looking for freedom and a fresh future. Can they ever find it in Tunisia?
