HEAVENLY GRASSLAND
A wagon is heading towards a nomadic village somewhere in the Mongolian steppes. On board are Sherghan, a coarse, indolent man in his forties, and Huzi, a ten-year-old Han Chinese boy who has been mute since he was abandoned by his parents. Sherghan is returning home after serving five years in prison for fraud. His wife Baruma, tired of being abused during his drunken rages, divorced him but has remained in the village with his younger brother Tengeli. Although things are now quiet between them, Baruma hasn't any intention to return to Sherghan. But Huzi intrigues her. For his part, Sherghan teaches the boy to hunt and other skills needed for life in the grasslands. One day, Tengeli, who had left to the city following an incident in the village, returns for a visit wearing a military uniform: he has joined the army. When he leaves again, Baruma is anxious and Huzi heartbroken. In the fall, the family break camp and move to a new location. Winter comes and a soldier appears, his face hidden. Baruma and Sherghan greet him pretending that it isn't Tengeli. The next morning, he's gone and things have changed forever. For Sherghan and Baruma and, especially, for young Huzi.
