IGBY GOES DOWN
Igby Slocumb, a rebellious and sarcastic seventeen-year-old boy, is at war with the stifling world of "old money" privilege into which he was born. With a schizophrenic father, a self-absorbed, distant mother and a shark-like Young Republican big brother, Igby figures there must be a better life out there, and he sets about finding it. Happily flunking out of yet another prep school, Igby is sent off to a military academy in the dreaded Midwest. With the aid of his mother's pilfered credit card, he goes on the lam. His black-comic trip eventually takes him to New York, where he hides out at his pompous, cigar-puffing godfather's weekend pied--terre in SoHo. There he encounters a menagerie of deviant characters, including his godfather's trophy choreographer girlfriend Rachel, who is getting hard drugs from would-be conceptual artist Russel, and Sookie Sapperstein, who's so terminally bored she can't bother to laugh at Igby's jokes, only to tell him that they were funny. In his quest to free himself from the oppressive dysfunction of his family, Igby's struggles veer from comic to tragic in an ultimately noble attempt to keep himself from "going down"."(The film) is a bildungsroman that doesn't advertise itself as such. The touches of black comedy here are bracingly nasty, but IGBY ultimately sells itself on genuine charm." -- Glenn Kenny (Premiere)"A family comedy so dark it turns THE ROYAL TENNEBAUMS into latter-day Bradys." -- Ken Eisner (Variety)
