ALEGR�A DE UNA VEZ
In the middle of a concert audience in Quito, a group of young people run in a circle, all in the same direction. They are teenagers living on the fringes of society. They live like they dance, spinning happily on the axis of their world, unaware or uncaring of what surrounds them. And in the middle of the crowd of people at the concert stands an innocent young rebel. Carlos spends his days between concerts, friends and beer. School is of no importance; it's just an obligation. He learns a lot more in the streets, in the music he listens to, and in the eternal conversations he has with his friends about his two favourite things in life -- girls and music. But to talk about girls is not the same as having one, and that is what Carlos realizes when he meets Alegr�a, a mysterious, loving but sometimes malicious young woman. His romance becomes the new centre for Carlos' existence, and he whirls around the exciting new world of love thoroughly oblivious to the possibility that Alegr�a may one day take off, leaving him alone with only empty pain around which to revolve.
Mateo Herrera
Born in Quito, Ecuador in 1973, Mateo Herrera had a very early interest in music and movies. After high school, he studied communications at the Arcos Institute of Visual Arts in Santiago, Chile, before returning to Ecuador to study film and multimedia. In 1996 he became a partner in Primal Producciones, for whom he directed commercials, music videos and documentaries. Selected filmography: La movida underground, Cesar Singo boxeador, Los Stakers de la Carolina, El rato de los ratos (1998), Mala sangre (2000). ALEGR�A DE UNA VEZ marks his debut in features.
