CAT'S CRADLE
Cristiano, Francisco and Gabriel, three upper-middle-class young men in S�o Paulo, have been best friends since their days in private school. Typical members of S�o Paulo's privileged bourgeoisie, they personify the dilemma of a generation born in the 1980s and brought up in the 1990s. Now, at the start of the 21st century, they are about to enter university, but they must face up to an increasingly cloudy future. On the one hand they were raised in comfort and have an inherited urge to enjoy themselves. On the other hand, economic times are harder; they are beginning to understand that the new Brazilian society offers fewer opportunities and that they will soon be taking their place as adults in a world where social inequalities will exert increasing pressure on the system. But, for now, their desire to have fun outweighs all other considerations. Their ignorance and irresponsibility soon lead to tragedy and death. They desperately try to cover up their involvement, to hide all traces that may connect them to the killing. But, still shirking their responsibility, the harder they try the more out-of-control their situation becomes.
Alexandre Stockler
Born in S�o Paulo, Brazil in 1973, Alexandre Stockler graduated in arts and communications from S�o Paulo University and began his career in the theatre, first as an actor, then as director and producer. He has directed two short films: Mr. Maines (1996) and Is a Man a Man?! (1998). In 1999 he and similarly minded artists founded an experimental filmmaking group called TRAUMA ("Trying to Realize Anything Urgently and with a Minimum of Audacity"), an ironic Latin American response to Dogma 95. CAT'S CRADLE is his first feature and the first to be made under the TRAUMA banner.
