HINTERLAND
After a ten-year absence, Jacques Pruez, a bachelor and journeyman actor in his 50s, returns to his native village to be with his dying mother. He stays with his aunts Aime and Jeofrette, renewing with the past and village gossip. Yvan, his father, the town's popular hairdresser, counts on his son's success to see him through to his old age and refuses to believe that his wife is ill, convinced, instead, that it is the doctors who are killing her. Jacques quarrels with his brother, Alain, a Bordeaux policeman, about what do do with the old man. Alain won't take him in. "I don't give a damn about the old bastard. Take him back to Paris. We don't want him." A prisoner of his childhood, the past, his village, Jacques wanders through its streets at night, reliving the moments that have made him what he is."This is a film of identity, very close to me, a way of going back, taking stock, coming full circle. It could only be shot in my hometown with a cast of local non-professionals. I could have shot it without a recce, just turn up with a camera in my hand. But I did it in spite of myself, as if it were a debt, an obligation... The only question was: 'Will I have enough distance?'" -- Jacques Nolot
