THE MAY LADY
Frough is a 42-year-old director of documentaries who is successful in her profession but finds her personal life to be a little more complicated. Divorced and living with her teenaged son Mani, Frough is considering taking another mate, but Mani can only see her as his mother and he thinks of himself as the man of the house. A subtle war of nerves erupts between mother and son. Rubbing salt into the wounds of Frough's domestic predicament is her current assignment to make a TV documentary on the topic of the model mother. She surrounds herself with videotaped images of women who testify to the hardships women face in society, not of their imaginary ideals. The differences between what Frough feels and what she is expected to film are painfully evident."Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, Iran's foremost female auteur, has produced her most personal film in the haunting MAY LADY... While her method recalls the coolly distanced views of Godard, Akerman and Duras, it also emerges organically from the director's own background as a socially engaged documentarian." -- Godfrey Cheshire (Variety)
