MY LITTLE BUSINESS
Ivan needs the skill of a juggler to run his small woodworking business -- deciding the priority of the orders, haggling with his creditors, supervising his small band of workers. He's a stickler for work well done. Not surprisingly his days last up to eighteen hours. And not surprisingly his wife Nathalie has grown tired of waiting up for him and has taken off with their teenaged son Christophe. Now she's living with Sami, a gym teacher at the local lyce. She may or may not still have a soft spot for Ivan but Sami at least keeps livable hours. Then, one day, a fire breaks out at Ivan's workshop. Equipment, wood stocks, urgent contracts, it all goes up in flames. Only the building itself is saved. Well, the contracts can be rewritten and the machines can be replaced. That's what insurance is for, right? Wrong. It seems that Maxime, his insurance broker, is a crook; he's been pocketing Ivan's premiums, and his pockets have holes. Ivan has no choice. To avert bankruptcy and save his workers from the dole, he'll have to cut a few legal corners -- get into the insurance company's computer and backdate his policy. To do it, however, Ivan will need a lot of help, Sami's physical prowess, for example, Maxime's deviousness and Christophe's computer smarts. It's a tricky job, to be sure, but that's what good planning is for. Ivan is a stickler for work well done.
Pierre Jolivet
After a couple of minor acting roles, Pierre Jolivet made his filmmaking debut as co-writer and co-producer (and actor) in Luc Besson's LE DERNIER COMBAT in 1983. A year later he made his own directorial debut with STRICTEMENT PERSONNEL. He has since directed seven other features, all but one from his own screenplays, and a TV series Sueurs froides (1988). He has also co-written Luc Besson's SUBWAY (1984) and Olivier Schatzky's FORTUNE EXPRESS (1990). His features include: LE COMPLEXE DU KANGOUROU (1986), UNCONTROLLABLE CIRCUMSTANCES (1987), SIMPLE MORTEL (1991), WHEN THE JUNGLE CATS GO TO DRINK (1992), FRED (1996) and IN ALL INNOCENCE (1998).
