NOT OF THIS WORLD
Caterina, a young nun who after five years is about to take her vows, is walking in a Milan park when a jogger runs by and hands her a newborn baby he found wrapped in a man's sweater. Caterina brings the baby to the appropriate authorities and all she's left with is the old sweater. The sweater and a reawakened maternal instinct. She gets the urge to find the baby's mother. A tag on the sweater leads her to a small dry-cleaning store run by Ernesto, an ill-humoured loner. At first puzzled by Caterina's quest, Ernesto finally warms to the young nun and decides to help her. Meanwhile, Teresa, the baby's young mother, wander aimlessly through the streets of Milan, looking for shelter and perhaps a job to tide her over until she can get a better handle on her life. She meets Gabriele, her ex-boyfriend, and attempts to rekindle their relationship. The relationship between Caterina and Ernesto is also beginning to blossom. What they all have in common is the newborn baby. That and a tenuous link with the world which they are attempting to reinforce."A textured, quietly affecting drama about strangers who touch each other's lives in unexpected ways, NOT OF THIS WORLD... avoids easy sentiment in favour of poignant observation." -- David Rooney (Variety)"A small masterpiece; surely the best Italian film of the season." -- Marco Spagnoli (Time Out)
