MEMORIES UNLOCKED
Max enjoys a worry-free existence. He busies himself painting in his large downtown loft, surrounded by people who love him and who come to his studio to be energized by his vitality. Max's strength is that of a survivor: he lost his legs years earlier but he is now back "on his feet" again, steadier than ever. Laurel, for whom he has a filial affection, is the most devoted of his visitors and shares with Max the joy of having recently found his birth mother. Another frequent visitor is Mortimer, his childhood friend, a talented and egocentric sculptor who cannot find peace even in success. There is also Pauline, Laurel's anguished adoptive mother, who has a small business in the neighbourhood, the innocent Julius, who has a child's mind in his adult's body, and the beautiful but fragile Maggie, Max's favourite model, who becomes infatuated with Mortimer. And last but far from least, there is Lucie, the ghostly survivor of a past shared with Max, who returns to haunt his nights with phone calls and finally appears in the flesh in a window across the street. She is determined to resurrect their painful past and to destroy his comfortable present.
