POPPOYA
Otomatsu is a small-town stationmaster in northern Japan. A dyed-in-the-wool railroader, he is honest and loyal to a fault. He didn't leave his station even when his only daughter took sick and died. When his beloved wife lay dying in a hospital, he postponed leaving his job until it was too late; she expired before he could reach the hospital. Now, nearing retirement, the branch line on which he spent most of his life has become unprofitable and will be closed down. Under his deep sense of loyalty to his work, Otomatsu regrets what he sacrificed for the railroad. But, again, it is too late. He can do nothing now but stand on the station platform and watch the falling snow. It's his duty. Then, one winter day, a beautiful little girl shows up on the platform. The girl is a stranger to him but the doll in her hand seems familiar. After a few words of conversation, she runs off like the wind. This brief encounter has remarkable consequences that grace his final days on the job. Duty may have its rewards after all...
