YOU CAN COUNT ON ME
Orphans at a young age, Sammy and Terry grew up together but have since drifted apart. Sammy is now a single mother who lives in their small upstate New York hometown with her precocious son Rudy, and Terry, a drifter who worked for a while in Alaska and spent time in a Florida jail, has come home to borrow some money and he ends up staying for a while. Terry comes at a good time for his older sister as her new boss Brian won't let her off her bank job to pick Rudy up from school and drop him off at the sitter's. In Terry, Sammy has a chauffeur and, eventually, a father figure. With his pool-playing, pot-smoking lifestyle however, Terry may not be the best male role model for Rudy. But then neither is Sammy the best female, especially after she starts an affair with her boss while his wife is six months' pregnant with their new child. The relationship between the siblings was never very neat and now it's gotten messier."Breathing fresh life into familiar material... YOU CAN COUNT ON ME is a superior, acutely observed comedy-drama about family ties... buoyed by four immensely enjoyable performances." -- Gavin Smith (Film Comment)
