TO THE LEFT OF THE FATHER
S�o Paulo province, Brazil in the 1940s. Two brothers meet in a boarding house. Pedro, the older of the two, has come to fetch his younger brother Andr�, to bring him back home. Andr�'s memories reveal the reasons for his departure. Caught between his religious, domineering father and his mother's suffocating tenderness and jealous of Pedro's privileged relationship with his father, Andr� feels trapped. Prodded by frustration and desire, he commits incest with his sister Ana. He then flees the family house and begins frequenting the local brothels while Ana seeks solace and refuge in the family chapel. Andr�'s rebellion has deeply shaken the household and his mother, in particular, is no longer herself. Now Andr� has returned and the family is ready to welcome him back. His other sisters greet him happily and everyone seems pleased to see him home. Everyone save Ana.
