ABANDONED
In 1960 Hungary was still deep in the depression that followed the failed anti-Communist revolt of 1956. ron Soproni is 9 and his parents have divorced. He is in the custody of his father who is incapable of assuming his paternal duties. ron's father drags him to a grim boys home in the country. ron endures his initiation, the punishments of his peers and a sadistic teacher who censors his letters. ron is desperately unhappy. Gradually, however, he begins to find a few friends in the place, each of them similarly unhappy. The institution is run by a tyrannical director whose deputy is a sadist and barely concealed pedophile. ron's only friends among the staff are the good-looking matron, whom the boys spy on while she showers, and another teacher who has been imprisoned himself for political reasons. ron dreams of other places and better times, a dream he shares with five other boys. They plot their escape..."Grim but finely crafted autobiographical reminiscence of childhood that is hauntingly effective. Centring on a luminous central performance from young Tams Mszros as the 9-year-old protagonist... ABANDONED is both moving and inspiring." -- David Stratton (Variety)
