KAH-CHAN - BIG MAMA
In 18th century Japan, famine prevails and people live without hope. Business is bad, poverty and unemployment are the order of the day. Okatsu, a widow, rears five children in a shabby tenement. The members of her family work hard but spend little, saving every coin they can. The neighbours call her a miser. The truth is, Okatsu is saving money for someone else. Her oldest son's friend, an impoverished carpenter, stole money from his master and was sent to jail. When released, this man will need a house for himself and his family and a job to support them. Okatsu and her family want to help him. As his release date approaches, their savings are enough for him to start a new life. The night before the carpenter's release, Yukichi sneaks into Okatsu's dwelling. He has heard the rumour that she is saving money. Yukichi, too, is jobless and homeless. Okatsu tells him how and why she and her family have accumulated their savings, and that he can take the money if he wants to. But how can he? Okatsu invites Yukichi to live with them in the tenement as part of her family...
