2001 Awards of the 32nd Canadian Student Film & Video Festival

After deliberation, the members of the jury have decided to award the following films and video.


Norman McLaren Award for the Best Production ($1000. offered by the National Film Board of Canada):



"PAIN RELIEF" by Jean-Fran�ois Daigle (Concordia University, Montreal)



Kodak Canada Grand Prix for the Best New Canadian Director (value of $5,000. in products for his next production):



"FOUR" by Joseph Baron (York University, Toronto)

For its effective use of sound and images creating a strong visual world within a clear well-structured story.



Awards in the Fiction Category:


Best Fiction film:

"INSIGHT" by Michelle Porter (University of British Colombia, Vancouver)

For making the viewer an active participant in the film through the strong use of point of view and concluding with a poetic ending.



Best Fiction video:

"PAIN RELIEF" by Jean-Fran�ois Daigle (Concordia University, Montreal)

For its corky and unpredictable storyline and audacious use of different styles to convey a thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable film.



Awards in the Experimental category:


Best Experimental film:

"ROUGE SUR FOND BLANC" by Philippe Hamelin (University of Montreal)

For expressing a very strong feeling of loneliness through experimental means.



Best Experimental video:

"R.U.R. (ROSSUM'S UNIVERSAL ROBOTS)" by Carmen Z. MacKinley (Concordia University, Montreal)

For a very provocative experience.



Special mention (Experimental Video category):

"INFINITY'S END" by Torrance Hurd (Simon Fraser University, Vancouver)

For creating a unique audio-visual world crafted with great style.




Awards in the Documentary category:


Best Documentary video:

"UNWANTED IMAGES: GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN THE NEW SOUTH AFRICA" by Monica Mak (McGill University, Montreal)

For making a film with an important subject matter and for poetically expressing modern horror and through its imagery showing how the horror has affected an entire community.



Special Mention (Documentary Video category):

"TO YOU, I SAY THIS" by Jill Baker (Humber College, Toronto)

For a personal approach to a universal theme.




Awards in the Animation category:


Best animation video:

"SHALETOWN" by Alexandra Myotte (Concordia University, Montreal)

For a well crafted animation film that created a unique and haunting world.




The members of the Jury were:

MARC BERTRAND, producer at the National Film Board of Canada

ANDREW CURRIE, film director from Vancouver

KIRSTEN WINTER, animation film director from Germany.
