Over $1,400,000 to allow the World Film Festival to grow!

Montreal, August 6th, 2002 Once again, the World Film Festival promises big discoveries! Open to all cinematic trends, this annual event offers exciting programming that attracts film fans from the four corners of the world and continues to please audiences, producers, directors and members of the industry who converge on Montreal to view films from over sixty countries. Having become essential among film festivals of the Western world, the event has received a grant of over $1,400,000 spread over three years by the Socit des vnements majeurs internationaux du Qubec (SEMIQ).

This financial support will enable the World Film Festival to enhance its regional and national profile, and to consolidate its promotional efforts abroad. The SEMIQ is proud to contribute to the expansion of a community event unique in North America, and to ensure its growth.

The SEMIQ contribution falls within the scope of the Renewal & development of major international events and of International promotion, two of the five main components of SEMIQ's financial support programs, which were created by the 20002001 Quebec budget.

SEMIQ's mission is to ensure the stability and growth of entertainment events that qualify as international happenings by supporting Quebec's unique talent in designing events and festivals. The creation of this fund has undeniably helped to create necessary tools to bring recognition to the socio-cultural and economic contribution of such events. The various support programs created by SEMIQ will no doubt help promote Quebec's international standing and stimulate economic growth in several industries.

SEMIQ's Board of Directors is responsible for managing a $30 million subsidy from the Quebec government over a period of three years (20002003), and will redistribute this amount at a rate of $10 million per year by granting direct subsidies to various events. These funds will be strategically invested in order to support the growth and development of the Quebec entertainment and tourism industry.
