IN OFFICIAL COMPETITION

The National Film Board of Canada is proudly taking part in the 26th World Film Festival, to be held in Montreal August 22 to September 2. The NFB will screen four animated shorts in official competition, as well as four documentaries and four animated shorts in the Panorama Canada section. The Film Board will also present the Norman McLaren Award in the Canadian Student Film & Video Festival and participate in the event Conferences 2002.

In the long tradition of cinematic excellence linking the National Film Board of Canada and the Montreal World Film Festival, we are especially proud that several of our outstanding documentaries and animated shorts have been selected this year, including Claude Jutra, portrait sur film, which will be having its world premiere at the WFF, said Jacques Bensimon, Government Film Commissioner and NFB Chairperson. We are also honoured to be associated with Conferences 2002, a series of workshops that will bring participants together with experts to discuss issues related to the increasingly globalized audiovisual market.

OFFICIAL COMPETITION

In the animated short Pirouette/La Pirouette, director Tali nibbles humorously at our unwillingness to contemplate the source of the food we consume. Food's journey from farm to plate is indeed a strange one. Produced by Pierre Hbert and Marcel Jean.

The visually stunning Loon Dreaming/Le Rve du huard by filmmaker Iriz Pbo opens with loons gracefully riding the waves. We suddenly see the world through the eyes of one of these spectacular birds. Produced by Michael Fukushima.

Dreams say more about hope and fear than words ever could. Angeli, by Lejf Marcussen, acclaimed Danish director of Public Voice (Den offentlige rst ), is a non-verbal film whose eloquence lies in rich imagery and music. Co-produced by Marcel Jean, for the NFB, and Svend Johansen and Carsten Holst, for Zentropa Real ApS.

Stiltwalkers/Les chassiers, by Sjaak Meilink, is a parable about a solitary fisherman who carves and sketches to pass the time. But his drawings seem to have a life of their own. Co-produced by Marcy Page for the NFB and Ton Crone for the Netherlands Institute for Animation Film.

PANORAMA CANADA

Who was Claude Jutra, the man behind the great artist who propelled Quebec cinema into the modern age with his unforgettable tout prendre? Director Paule Baillargeon tries to answer this question in Claude Jutra, portrait sur film, co-produced by Anne Frank for Fox-Fire Films Ltd., Andr Thberge for Production Docu 2 inc., and Nicole Lamothe and Yves Bisaillon for the NFB.

In Beverly Shaffer's To My Birthmother, Marie Klaassen, adopted at birth, sets out to find her birthmother. Her quest opens a Pandora's box of secrets and surprises on her journey to unravel the mystery of her origins and identity. Shaffer won an Oscar in 1978 for I'll Find a Way. To My Birthmother is produced by Beverly Shaffer and Mark Zannis.

In director Thierry Le Brun's Un Certain souvenir, the filmmaker goes on a quirky quest to find out the meaning of Je me souviens on the Quebec licence plate, meeting a cast of characters with wildly differing views. Produced by Adam Symansky.

Mmoires de la terre records the meeting of two artistic worlds: that of the Haida and that of Frdric Back, a master of animation and a committed humanist. The film is a veritable ode to nature, achieved through a combination of animation and strikingly beautiful photography. Produced by Jean Lemire, Claude Cartier and Roger Frappier for Max Films, directed by Jean Lemire and Frdric Back, and distributed by the NFB.

Short in length but long on quality, the NFB's animation films are always a big hit with audiences. The four animated shorts in this year's Panorama Canada section are all produced by Marcy Page.

In Flux, Oscar-nominated animator Chris Hinton (Blackfly) plays with the speed of life. Vivid as a Miro painting, Flux focuses on a house where family life seems to unfold at a breakneck pace. Flux has garnered multiple international awards, including the FIPRESCI Prize and a Special Distinction at the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

In Elbow Room/Distances by filmmaker Diane Obomsawin, an office worker arrives bright and early, ready for another day on the job. But wait, there's a new co-worker, sitting in a chair uncomfortably close. Pretty soon, elbows are bumping, ink is spilling, and tempers are flaring.

In The Hungry Squid, by Oscar-winning director John Weldon (Special Delivery), animals of all kinds, including a giant squid, seem to have a voracious appetite for Dorothy's homework.

Directed by Anna Tchernakova and Georgine Strathy, Sea and Stars is the story of an ordinary fisherman who lives on a small island. His life is completely changed when a young mai-mai fish falls in love with him!

NORMAN McLAREN AWARD

The NFB will present the Norman McLaren Award to the director of the best production in the Canadian Student Film & Video Festival. The NFB is a longstanding partner of this festival and in presenting the award, reconfirms its support for emerging filmmakers.

CONFERENCES 2002
