Synopsis
Rosa, self-confident young woman, just wants to live a peaceful life in a small valley in the Alps during the Second World War. But natural catastrophes, increasingly difficult living conditions, betrayal and the effects of the war put any chance of happiness in jeopardy. Her fiancé has been called up to spend the rest of the war at the front. However, Peter, a traitor, is staying at home. He is a converted National Socialist, even at the end of the war. His defection to the Nazis came from his love for Rosa and jealousy towards his rival, Hans. But it's not only his belief in National Socialism but also his desire for modernity and access to a world outside the valley, which leads to his conflict with Rosa and with others in the valley. VALS is a realistic look at the complexity of relationships during tough times, times of need, misery, death and little happiness. A world, which today only lives on in the stories of those who lived through it.
Director
Austrian historian and filmmaker Anita Lackenberger has directed several documentaries on a variety of social, historical and cultural subjects. These include Hildegard Burjan - A Life for Humanity (2009), The Ladinien Century (2010), South Tyrol is a Matter of Heart (2011), Mistresses of the Orient (2011), Shaker - Religion Without Sexuality (2012), Lost Lives - Austrian Women in the Soviet Gulag (2013). VALS marks her debut in fiction features.
