Synopsis
The 1980s was a tumultuous period in Poland. The revolution that started with the rise of the Solidarity movement, finally led to the fall of Communism in Europe. But not all of Poland’s heroes of the era were political. One of them was a cardiac surgeon by the name of Zbigniew Religa, who is considered the father of heart transplantation in Poland. For the majority of Poles he still remains an icon of medicine, the most brilliant doctor and a saver of countless lives. But he was also a rebel, a breaker of moral, cultural and even medical taboos. This is his complicated story.
Director
Born in Warsaw in 1976, Lukasz Palkowski apprenticed as assistant director before making his own directorial debut in 2004 with Our Street, a short that won first prize at the Warsaw Jewish Festival. He made his feature debut three years later in PRESERVE. He has directed extensively for Polish television and a second feature, FEMALE-MALE WAR, in 2011.
